France's Health Care System

Almost everyone in the United States understands that the U.S. health care system needs to be fixed. Policymakers, whether Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Socialists, or others, all have their own ideas about how to fix the United States health care system. Some believe better privatization is the answer, while others want a universal health care system.

To make their arguments, many people in the United States look to other countries. In 2001, France's health care system was noted by the World Health Organization as the best in the world. Most people in the U.S. are unaware that in France, there are mostly private practitioners. France has its own state health insurance, in which most doctors take part. The system is even more efficient than that of the United States, costing $3,500 per person compared to U.S. $6,100 per person.

Additionally, medical school students do not have to pay tuition and doctors in France do not have to worry about being sued. The combination of these two factors allows France to have a strong health care system.

Clearly, France has a lot of admirable characteristics in its health care system, and the United States still faces a lot challenges in making its health care system better. The United States health care system, while maybe not as strong as that of France, nonetheless works.
