Getting Kicked Off Your Parents' Health Insurance Plan

With excitement of graduation comes the financial burden of health insurance. Most providers only cover children of their clients through undergraduate study. Once a student graduates from college, he is expected to seek his own health insurance independently. For those who land a job, health benefits may be included. However, with the sour economy, many graduates cannot land a job and are left uninsured.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that only 19.7% of 2009 graduates who are actively seeking a job have found one. Two years ago this number was 51%. Last year it fell to 26%. According to researchers, there are several reasons for this low rate. First is the struggling economy. Businesses are not growing, and many are laying off employees to reduce costs. This creates a large pool of unemployed workers. When the laid-off workers combine with past graduates of 2008 who still have not found work, the competition for the 2009 graduates becomes brutal. Overall unemployment in the United States has now reached a 26 year high of 9.5%.

Even if one is lucky enough to land a job, not all employers provide health insurance. If the company does include health benefits, there may be a lengthy waiting period before it is activated.

In 2005, 13.3 million young adults between the ages of 19 and 29 did not have health insurance coverage. This makes them one of the largest populations who are not covered.
