Health Spending Accounts

There are a variety of ways to pay for health insurance. The most traditional, of course, is to work in a place that provides benefits at a group rate, and where part of your paycheck or compensation goes toward the payment of those benefits. This is not the only format for paying for health care costs, though. There are a few more that involve flexible spending accounts which employers can set up.

Flexible spending accounts. Employers can set up accounts that employees pay parts of their wages to in order to pay for health care costs as they are incurred. Employers can contribute to these accounts in any way that they wish. Because of the legalities of these accounts, the contributions to them not taxed.

Medical savings accounts. These accounts are set up so that either the employee or the employer periodically puts money into them to cover uninsured medical costs. The funds in these accounts can earn interest similar to an IRA, and are only taxed if used for non-medical purposes.

Health reimbursement arrangements. These programs are set up by the employer to directly reimburse employees for medical expenses. The employer can place money into them and can write it off as a tax-free business expense.
