How the Economic Downturn Affects Health Insurance
One of the major challenges facing President Barack Obama, Congress, and the United States of America as a whole is getting affordable health insurance and health care to as many people as possible, preferably everyone. Getting affordable health insurance to everyone has been a problem for a very long time, and the current economic crisis has only complicated matters.
Among of the effects of current economic crisis has been the fall in value of people's assets. People's investments in the stock market have lost value sharply, in effect, reducing people’s wealth. Moreover, people’s retirement and pension plans, such IRAs, have lost value as well. Furthermore, home values have decline, making people poorer as well. Because people have become poorer they will have to work for more years than they had planned.
This has two major implications for health insurance. For one thing, people's need for insurance has increased. As people working longer into their life, they exert their body more than they would have if they had retired earlier. With the body being exerted for more years to come, it is at a higher risk of health problems. To address health problems that arise, health insurance is needed.
Another implication of the economic crisis for health insurance is that it has made people more unable, or at least more unwilling, to purchase health insurance. People who never had health insurance cannot likely purchase health insurance in the current situation because of tight financial situations. They have likely lost money in the economic downturn and have maybe lost their jobs. Also, some people who have had insurance have considered abandoning their health insurance plans to save money.
Clearly, the current economic downturn, like any economic downturn, has complicated the health care crisis by increasing people’s need for health insurance by making health insurance less affordable.
